icons — meteors of withered flowers // she spills water in her purse / puts her foot on the strap, stumbles, / doesn’t see the lamp, the lamp falls on her head / the sleeping pill—already taken—bruise without the pain / window left open at night, 18 below / bronchitis and neck pain the morning after / will she be alive at the end of the day // with punched eyes she comes out of a boxing / match, she vs. she / rapidly she paints strokes / of green gold red—a baroque effect / in her beauty case a small comb / petronius’ chocolate / alembics, philosopher’s stones / waves in her hair like holes in the swiss cheese / she goes deep down with her hands / the hands are stuck

the valley was falling into darkness / while time was being counted / in excess so that we could hear the silence / slice up the temples clean / one could wheeze off the fear / amidst painful gasps / or look for a telephone booth / and then go back in the car / and smash the neighbors’ windows

one gets tired of walking / where the grass grows no more / the feet do not slide / you feel the regret / corroding your heart— / and ungluing your feet / from the wet sand / is the only heavy task that’s left

beaten apricot woke up / with a tremor in her arm / a wave of orange juice on her notebooks / so much time to be chewed— / open-mouthed // the scissors left their mark on one more destiny / her head was still on the bed / near the grapes of her broken genitals // “let me die in peace” / in a mint-scented wheeze— / a tingling seemed to tear the foot apart / like the warm bread broken in two pieces / by the sharp pull / of two uninjured hands

Victoria Surliuga (Londra, 1972), torinese, è Assistant Professor di Italianistica alla Texas Tech University, a Lubbock, nel Texas. È autrice di due volumi di poesie, Risposte del silenzio (Farnesiana 1994) e Allergia alla notte (Campanotto 2000), e della plaquette dal titolo abbandono (Edizioni PulicinoElefante 2003). Una selezione di suoi lavori poetici si trova sui siti di Lietocollelibri e Ululate. Inoltre, si occupa di poesia italiana contemporanea e ha dedicato particolare attenzione all'opera di Giampiero Neri. Le sue pubblicazioni più recenti includono una monografia su Neri, Uno sguardo sulla realtà. L’opera poetica di Giampiero Neri (Edizioni Joker 2005) e la cura del volume di prose La serie dei fatti. Quindici prose di Giampiero Neri (Lietocollelibri 2004). Ha anche scritto sul lavoro poetico di Franco Loi e Giancarlo Majorino, e si è occupata del rapporto tra pittura e poesia in Giambattista Marino.
